In the US, Accuweather forecast that the northeast US coast could be the target of a major hurricane, perhaps as early as this season. The forecast suggests that in terms of number of storms, the 2006 hurricane season will be more active than normal, but less active than last summer’s historic storm season.

Researchers at Georgia Tech applied a new methodology to the analysis of global hurricane data and concluded that the increasing trend in the number of category 4 and 5 hurricanes for the period 1970 to 2004 is directly linked to the trend in rising sea surface temperatures.

The Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World contains a lot of really big companies. Their Mission Statement "sounds good" - it's certainly the incremental approach. It would be hard for a really big company to be truely sustainable.

We believe that companies’ ability to handle risks, such as environmental, labor, and human rights related, are powerful proxies and leading indicators for their overall management quality. Management quality, in turn, is the single greatest determinant of companies’ financial performance. The aim of this initiative is to promote better managed and better performing corporations regarding sustainability issues. We believe that poorer performing corporations will be eclipsed by the Global 100 corporations; corporations that make money for their shareholders, enhance their national and local communities of operation, leave as small a footprint as possible on the environment, treat employees well, and keep customers happy.
